About Cre-A:
Cre-A:, a publishing house in Tamil, was established in 1974. Cre-A: has published serious fiction in Tamil, direct translations from Indian languages like Bengali, Kannada, Hindi and from French and German. Cre-A: has published in several disciplines including appropriate technology, healthcare, agriculture, environment, media, modern history. The experience of dealing with varied Tamil texts led to the making of a dictionary for contemporary Tamil.
The lexicographic projects, started in 1985, led to the publication of Cre-A: Dictionary of Contemporary Tamil (Tamil-Tamil-English) in 1992. After several reprints, a new, revised and expanded edition was published in 2008. Both the editions used a specially developed corpus, drawing texts from different disciplines and styles.
The corpus used for the revised edition consisted of 7,500,000 words. This corpus is useful for studying the various aspects of contemporary Tamil. With the object of providing access for scholars and students of contemporary Tamil, a chunk of it, with 3,000,000 words, has been made available in the module ‘Corpus’ of this website. The module will be continuously updated.
In another module, Cre-A: Dictionary of Contemporary Tamil (1992) is available. The dictionary can be searched by labels such as grammatical label, stylistic label, subject label, etc. besides the headword.
